Mastering Realism in Digital Mockups

What separates a mediocre digital composite from an indistinguishable photograph is the treatment of shadow and light. Shadows communicate grounded depth, spatial perspective, and surface material interaction.

The Three Types of Realistic Shadows

When creating or refining PSD mockups, always separate shadows into three distinct layers:

• Contact Shadow: Darkest, sharpest shadow directly beneath the object base. Set layer to Multiply blend mode with 80-95% opacity.
• Soft Form Shadow: Gradual blur extending outward from the object. Uses Gaussian Blur (15-40px radius) with lower opacity (30-50%).
• Ambient Occlusion: Diffuse lighting shadow where ambient light cannot reach. Adds subtle realism in dark corners and crevice folds.
